In 2008, Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for playing the role of Kirk Lazarus in the Tropic Thunder. While many have found his role to be controversial since Robert is in, what is now seen as a, modern-day blackface, a blogger for CinemaBlend has a different view. He believes Robert deserves an Oscar nomination.
He writes, “Downey’s performance is surprisingly complex, especially for a parody comedy. But there is no parody of his performance. He fully manages his duality as a fictional character he plays in reference to fiction thinking of the character he was playing on top of… .Dewey surrendered to himself, so, even if Kirk Lazarus removed his mask to reveal his true self, there would still be no sign of the RDJ anywhere in character. ”
While Robert was up for the nomination, he did not win the Oscar. That year, the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor went to Heath Ledger with the most possibility.
He has also been nominated for several other awards for ‘Tropic Thunder’.

She was also nominated for a Satellite Award and a Teen Choice Award for her role in the Tropic Thunder. That’s seven total nominations for a role.

Blackface has an ugly history in America and is the cause of “cancellation” today. If a celebrity (or anyone) is blameless doing so, they often interfere with charcoal in the media. The presence of Robert Downey Jr don blackface, even for satirical purposes in the Tropic Thunder, has been the subject of conversation at the time and has recently been back in the news.
Robert recently went on record to defend his portrayal of the film. According to IndieWire, Robert says, “I have to conform to the nature of the self-deprecating self-image of artists and think they are allowed to do it sometimes, just in my opinion,” he says. “And 90 percent of my black friends are like, ‘Dude, that’s great.’ I can’t agree with [the other 10 percent], but I know where my heart lies … In my defense, Tropic Thunder is about how wrong [blackface] is, so I’m different. ”
